Why Stink Bugs Swarm Stark County Homes Every Fall

Every October, like a schedule nobody agreed to, the shield-shaped squatters arrive — sunning themselves on south-facing siding by the dozen, then by the hundred. Here’s what they’re doing, and how to keep them on the outside of it.

Why Stink Bugs Swarm Stark County Homes Every Fall

The brown marmorated stink bug is an import that found Ohio very much to its liking. It doesn’t bite, doesn’t damage the house, doesn’t even eat much indoors. What it does is show up in overwhelming numbers, squeeze inside for the winter, and offend everyone when startled.

Why your house, specifically

Stink bugs are looking for three things in October: a warm wall to mass on, a gap to slip through, and a quiet void to wait out winter. South and west-facing walls get the afternoon sun, so they get the bugs. Homes near tree lines, gardens, and field edges get the biggest crowds — which in Stark County describes a lot of addresses from Hartville to Minerva.

How they get in

A stink bug flattens itself like it’s auditioning for a mail slot. The usual entries: worn window screens, gaps around AC lines and utility penetrations, loose siding joints, attic vents without intact screening, and the barely-there gap around door sweeps. If daylight shows through it, a stink bug considers it a door.

What actually works

  • September seal-up: screens, sweeps, utility gaps, and vent mesh — before the first cold night, not after the first swarm.
  • Perimeter treatment: a professional exterior treatment timed to the fall migration cuts the numbers that make it inside dramatically.
  • Vacuum, don’t crush: the ones already inside get vacuumed and the bag goes straight outside. Crushing releases the smell that gives them their name — and it can attract more.
Timing note: the massing week shifts with the weather — first real cold snap after a warm stretch triggers it. That week is when the seal-up pays for itself, and it’s the week our phones ring hardest.
